6 course lute
This Renaissance lute has a string length of 640 mm and the pitch is “F sharp “ (A=440).
It is after a Magno Dieffopruchar 6 course (belonging to Charles Beare). The original is one of only two extant 6 course lutes in original condition (the other is by Georg Gerle). The back shape is less deep than the Gerle and therefore very comfortable to hold and the outline is a slightly rounder shape. The strutting I used on this instrument is very similar to the original (slightly different to later lutes), and produces a very clear, warm and lively projecting sound. The original has a ivory back and ivory veneered neck and pegbox. The instrument here has a cherry back with ebony spacers and a clear varnish, beech neck and pegbox with plum pegs and bridge and pernambuco fingerboard.
